SUP

SUP is a very accessible sport – almost anyone can learn to SUP.

 

It’s popular with people of all ages and provides a great workout to develop fitness and core strength.

In Oxford one of the most famous rivers in the world – the Thames, steeped in history and teeming with wildlife. This powerful and mysterious river is on our doorstep but few realise they can actually use it – be on it, enjoy and appreciate it. It is safe to SUP on the Thames but we do move about throughout Oxfordshire

We can operate on whichever water location suits you best.

These sessions are not based around the turn of the tide like most of our sessions so can be a bit more challenging. We will spend part of the session paddling against the incoming or outgoing tide (imagine a gym workout using the treadmill to maximise effort), hence these are shorter than our usual 2hr sessions.

Although we will try to base the session around times when the tide is nowhere near full flow (low treadmill setting) it may still be quite high energy so you will burn up calories while having fun learning in more challenging conditions with a qualified instructor. It could be a fast track to becoming a better SUP paddler.

We have adapted our sessions to adhere to social distancing guidelines and all equipment will be disinfected after each session.

This stand up paddleboard session is suitable for paddlers with a bit of experience or for beginners with good water confidence who want to push themselves a bit more and are not afraid of a challenge.

You will need to be able to swim and be confident in the water. A certain level of flexibility and ability to get up to standing from kneeling is required for learning to paddleboard.

Weather conditions

Whilst we endeavour to carry out our SUP sessions, minimum numbers, instructor availability and weather conditions (If it is very windy or there is torrential rain meaning poor visibility) may mean we have to reschedule your lesson. We will always contact you to advise you as soon as we are able to discuss the options with you.

What to bring

No specialist clothing is required. In warm weather, ordinary gym gear will be fine (shorts/leggings/T-shirt/sweatshirt), with old sandals or trainers you don’t mind getting wet. Or you can get cheap neoprene wet shoes from most large supermarkets. No bare feet, footwear is required at all our SUP locations.

In colder weather (November – March), a wetsuit would be advisory. Always bring a towel and a change of clothes just in case you take a little dip during the SUP lesson.

Requirements

In light of the current Covid-19 restrictions, we will require you to keep a safe distance of at least 2m from your coach during both the safety briefing and the on-water session. The coach only comes within this distance if it is absolutely necessary for your safety. 

You do not need to be a proficient swimmer, but should be comfortable about falling into the water while wearing a buoyancy aid.

A certain level of flexibility and ability to get up to standing from kneeling is required for learning to paddleboard.

You will need to shower/wash thoroughly after the session if you have fallen in or been splashed and need to ensure any open cuts are covered.

We have taken people with physical and mental disabilities out on the water however please contact us before booking as we may need to take you out privately to ensure you receive the coach’s full attention.

We will also need to know of any recent injuries prior to the session.

  • 1 person                – £60.00 per hour
  • 2 people sharing – £45.00 per person per hour

(We have found that to get the best from the sessions, 2 hours appears to be the most effective )

Please compare these costs to other local facilities where it is £20.00 just for the board hire and no assistance.
