For years, my approach to sports and fitness was simple: brute force.
Throughout my teens and twenties, I relied on aggression and a decent level of fitness to bulldoze my way through any challenge. Mountain biking? Charge down the hill. Football? Tackle harder. Gym? Lift heavier. Half marathons? Rock up and get it done. I felt invincible. Scrapes, bruises, sprains, strains, broken bones, stitches, metal work were badges of honour - proof of my relentless approach. Then, in 2018, it changed, something shifted. I was 40, and during a leisurely mountain bike ride in preparation for a week in Morzine, I had a seemingly innocuous fall. At an incredibly slow speed - I hit something, over the handlebars I went and into the ground. Instead of the usual stand up and a quick brush-off, I laid there and thought, "Shit, that hurt." I stood up, went dizzy, felt sick and laid back down. I knew something was wrong – significant damage. A broken collarbone, shoulder dislocation, broken wrist, a torn pec with heavy cuts on both knees. (please see the pic above as a week later my boy was bang out of luck also) It wasn't just a physical injury; it was a stark, undeniable wake-up call. I realised something profound: ‘I no longer bulldozed - I broke.’ That moment was a turning point. My body was telling me, in no uncertain terms, that my old approach was no longer sustainable. The years of pushing my limits without considering the long-term consequences had caught up with me. I couldn't rely on youthful resilience anymore. I needed a new direction. This wasn't just about recovering from the injury; it was about reimagining my relationship with fitness – what did I want to do next and what direction did I want to go? I had to shift from a "no pain, no gain" mentality to a more well-rounded approach that prioritised longevity and sustainable health. This is where my deep dive into NLP proved crucial. I leveraged those principles to reshape my mindset and approach, moving from a forceful approach to a collaborative one with my mind and body. By identifying and shifting beliefs about ageing and responsibilities ( I got very fed up with people telling me ‘You're too old to be doing that now…) alongside identifying my real purpose - I forged my new, sustainable path to health. The shift wasn't easy. It required me to let go of old habits and embrace a more balanced approach. But the rewards have been immense. I feel stronger, more resilient, and more connected to my body than ever before. The experience taught me that fitness isn't just about pushing your physical limits; it's about understanding and respecting them. That we all need a solid mental game plan in place as we navigate this ever-changing thing called life and all that it brings. It's about building a foundation of health that will support you for years to come. This approach to my own situation, has led me to my client facing 'Think Differently' programme - A new way to approach your health, your fitness and your real reason to change. Proud to say my clients are smashing it on many levels from a strong foundation of mental and physical work. See what they have to say here So I ask, Is this you -
Then let shave a chat and discuss the way forward Remember you are not alone - It is never too late to change direction. I'd love to hear your story about what is holding you back.

![]() Let's talk frankly. I've had a couple conversations this week where potential clients have expressed a desire to work with me based on strong recommendations, but then hesitated and said ‘I know a trainer down the road who is cheaper….’. Which got me thinking… It has prompted me to clarify the value of what I offer and why experience matters when investing in your health and well-being. I have been involved in the health, fitness and sports industry for 28 years, witnessing countless trends come and go. Fad diets, quick fixes, weird funky gadgets, magic pills... you get the idea. They all promise the world but ultimately disappoint. Why? Because lasting change, genuine results, require more than a fleeting trend. They require a dedicated investment in yourself both physically and mentally - not a quick fix solution. Consider this: You wouldn't aspire to become a master chef solely by watching online videos, would you? You would seek expert guidance, learn refined techniques, and dedicate yourself to the craft. The same principle applies to your health and fitness journey. It's not just about knowing what to do; it's about understanding why, how and when to do it and having the support and accountability to ensure consistent progress. Attempting to navigate the complexities of health and fitness alone can be overwhelming and often leads to frustration, injury and then abandoned goals. (Especially in the modern world where comparison to social media influencers is just bonkers!) How much time and energy have you already invested with minimal return? How many programmes have you started with enthusiasm, only to find your motivation waning after a few weeks? Sustainable progress is not solely reliant on willpower; it requires a proven strategy, expert guidance, and unwavering support. This is where my expertise proves itself. My 28 years of experience spans various disciplines within the health, fitness and sports industry, providing me with a comprehensive understanding of training principles, the psychology of lasting change, and the critical importance of human behaviour and working in different countries allows me to understand different cultures. I have consistently invested in my professional development, acquiring numerous certifications and accreditations to refine my skills, my interest and expand my knowledge. However, what truly distinguishes me is the breadth of my experience. This diverse background equips me with a unique perspective. As a sports coach, I have worked with elite athletes, including those in Premier League football and Formula One, developing training regimes to optimise their performance within the sports science teams. This experience has instilled in me the principles of periodisation, progressive overload, and performance enhancement, which are essential for achieving significant and lasting results. As a personal trainer, I have applied these same principles to guide individuals of all fitness levels in achieving their personal goals, overcoming various road blocks even amidst the challenges of busy family lifestyles and demanding work schedules. My experience as an exercise referral specialist for a local district council has further enriched my understanding of individual needs and limitations, enabling me to create safe and effective programmes for those with specific health considerations. Working closely alongside various medical professionals to provide tailored support for individuals facing diverse health challenges, ensuring a seamless continuum of care. As a qualified sports massage therapist with a keen interest in injury rehabilitation. This multifaceted background allows me to not only guide you in building strength and fitness but also to facilitate effective recovery, prevent injuries and address any existing physical limitations that may be hindering your progress. In recent years, I have delved into the 'Mental Game' through NLP and behaviour change coaching studies, recognising that true transformation extends beyond the physical. I understand that sustainable change requires addressing the underlying beliefs, habits and thought patterns that can often sabotage our best intentions. This integrated approach allows me to bridge the gap between general fitness for health, high-performance training, and therapeutic exercise. I ensure that your roadmap is not only effective but also strategically designed for long-term success, tailored to your individual needs, and empowers you with the mental and physical tools necessary for lasting change. If you would like to know more about me and my story then click here While you may find trainers with lower fees, it's crucial to consider the value you receive in return. Are you simply paying for someone to demonstrate exercises, or are you investing in a coach who possesses a deeper understanding from a variety of disciplines? Who can create a bespoke programme aligned with your unique goals, and who brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table? My fees reflect the significant investment I have made in my own education and development, the results I consistently deliver, and the unique combination of skills and experience I offer. I provide a level of expertise and personalised attention that is rarely matched. I don't simply provide generic, off-the-shelf plans. I take the time to understand you as an individual – your goals, limitations, lifestyle, commitments, motivations and even your stress levels. I consider every aspect of your life to create a bespoke roadmap tailored to your success. I am dedicated to coaching, guiding, and motivating you every step of the way, celebrating your victories and providing unwavering support. Don't take my word for it, please check out what my flagship programme 'Think Differently' clients have to say with in depth reviews here Investing in a professional coach like me is not merely an expense; it is an investment in your health, your confidence and your future. It's about achieving the results you deserve efficiently and effectively, breaking free from the cycle of false starts, and embracing sustainable, long-term change. It's about having a dedicated partner in your corner, championing your success every step of the way. Stop wasting valuable time and resources on approaches that don't deliver. If you are ready to invest in the real you, then let's talk. As I mentioned at the start, It got me thinking..... ![]() As the crisp winter air begins to soften and the days lengthen, a sense of anticipation fills the Oxfordshire mountain biking community. Please have a look at more details - https://www.project-active.co.uk/mtb.html Remember the thrill of your first bike ride?
The wind in your hair, the wobbly excitement, the sheer joy of freedom? We're looking to ignite that same spark in a new generation of riders. In the heart of West Oxfordshire and Woodstock initially, a seed of an idea is growing a junior mountain bike group, ready to carve its own path through the local trails. Picture this: a group of young adventurers, (secondary school age), gathering at the trailhead, their bikes gleaming in the sunlight. Some are seasoned riders, eager to conquer new challenges; others are just starting out, their eyes wide with anticipation. But they all share one thing: a love for the outdoors and a thirst for adventure. This isn't just about riding bikes; It's about building camaraderie, learning and discovering the hidden beauty of our local landscape. Imagine them navigating winding trails, mastering technical climbs, and celebrating each other's successes. We envision a community where children encourage each other, learn valuable skills, and build confidence that extends far beyond the trail. Think bike maintenance workshops, health awareness, fitness aspirations, navigation lessons, and maybe even some friendly group challenges to fuel their competitive spirit. This is where your story, or rather, your child's story, can begin. We're in the early stages of forming this exciting group and are looking for families who share our vision. If you have a young adventurer at home who's ready to embrace the thrill of mountain biking, I would love to hear from you. The initial thoughts can be found at https://www.project-active.co.uk/mtb.html Let's write this adventure together. Let's get those wheels spinning and create memories that will last a lifetime. "Mountain biking isn't just a hobby for me; it's a passion that fuels my soul. It's a love affair with the trails, the challenges, and the sheer joy of being outdoors. Several things draw me to this sport, from the intense physical workout to the much-needed mental escape and the constant sense of exploration. Physically, mountain biking is a full-body workout disguised as fun. From powering up steep climbs, engaging every muscle in my legs, to navigating tricky descents, requiring core strength and balance, it pushes me to my limits. The burn in my legs, the pumping of my heart, the feeling of exertion – it's all part of the experience. It's a demanding sport, but the rewards are immense. I feel stronger, fitter, and more connected to my body with every ride. Beyond the physical benefits, mountain biking offers an unparalleled mental escape. When I'm on the trail, the world melts away. The only thing that matters is the next turn, the line I'm choosing, the rhythm of my breath. It's a form of moving meditation, a chance to quiet the mind and find a sense of peace amidst the chaos of everyday life. The focus required to navigate the terrain forces me to be present in the moment, leaving no room for worries or distractions. Finally, mountain biking satisfies my innate sense of adventure and exploration. Each trail is a new discovery, a chance to explore hidden corners of the countryside and witness breathtaking views. I love the feeling of venturing into the unknown, of pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, and of conquering challenges that once seemed impossible. Whether it's discovering a hidden waterfall, spotting a rare bird, or simply enjoying the serenity of a quiet forest, mountain biking allows me to connect with the outdoors on a deeper level and experience the thrill of exploration. It's a constant reminder of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us, waiting to be discovered. For me, mountain biking is more than just a sport; it's a way of life, a source of joy, and a constant reminder of the incredible power of the outdoors." Professionally, it enables me to work with my one to one Think Differently coaching clients on whole different level with greater impact and results. Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. So, what are you waiting for? Let's hit the trails together and enjoy the ride! It really is time to Think Differently about where you want to go with your health and fitness........ On your side, ![]() This newsletter isn't about what I have been up to with my clients or about what I have coming up, it's about my client Elaine's journey, one that I believe will resonate with so many of you. Elaine's story starts like many of us - for a long time, the concept of "health and fitness" felt overwhelming for her, an impossible mountain to climb. She described the all-too-familiar cycle of enthusiastic starts, fuelled by fleeting motivation, only to be followed by inevitable crashes and the disheartening feeling of failure. But things have shifted for Elaine. The focus is no longer on dramatic transformations or striving for some unrealistic ideal; it's on the power of small, consistent steps. She's discovered that true, lasting change isn't about radical overhauls; it's about weaving healthy habits seamlessly into the tapestry of daily life. Elaine's journey has been less about conquering marathons and more about celebrating small, personal victories. It began with something as simple as mindful eating. Instead of rushing through meals, she started paying attention to her body's cues, savouring each bite and recognising when she was truly full. It was a subtle shift, but it made a world of difference. From there, she added another small step: morning dog walk / runs. Initially, she felt a little self-conscious, worried about whether she could keep up with her energetic pup and what other early risers might think. But she pushed past that initial discomfort, and now, those morning runs are a cherished part of her day. They energise her for the day ahead, strengthen her bond with her dog, and allow her to enjoy the peace and quiet of the early morning. These small, seemingly insignificant changes began to ripple outwards. Mindful eating lead to healthier food choices. The morning dog walk runs provided more energy, which motivated her to want more. Then, recognising some lingering imbalances and a slight nagging injury from the past, We then decided to incorporate strength training into her routine. She started slowly, working with me to learn proper form and focusing on exercises that addressed her specific needs. It wasn't about lifting heavy weights; it was about building a strong foundation, improving her posture, and preventing future injuries. This addition of strength training has become a vital part of her journey, not just for physical benefits, but also for the sense of empowerment it provides. One small win led to another, creating a positive upward spiral. Elaine's journey also included exploring the power of behaviour change coaching. She realised that her physical wellness was deeply connected to her mental and emotional well-being. Through our coaching, she gained a deeper understanding of her own limiting beliefs and the patterns that were holding her back. It provided a safe space for her to explore her values, clarify her goals, and develop strategies for overcoming obstacles. This increased self-awareness has been instrumental in helping her stay committed to her wellness journey, even when faced with challenges. Our coaching process helped Elaine discover a newfound sense of direction with real purpose. It wasn't just about losing weight or getting stronger; it was about creating a life that truly aligned with who she was and what she wanted. She learned to prioritise self-care, set healthy boundaries, and cultivate a more positive and empowering mindset. This clarity of purpose has given her the motivation and resilience to keep moving forward, even when things get tough. Consistency has been key for Elaine. There are days when she's tempted to hit snooze instead of heading out for her run, days when the old habits of mindless snacking creep back in, and days when her muscles ache after a strength training session. On those days, she's learned to be kind to herself. There's no self-criticism for missing a workout or indulging in a treat. Instead, she acknowledges it, learns from it, and gently guides herself back on track the next day. This compassionate approach, nurtured through our coaching sessions, has been essential for her in maintaining consistency. This isn't about Elaine striving for some unattainable image of perfection; it's about her honouring her body, understanding its needs, and making choices that nourish her both physically and mentally. It's about progress, not perfection. I'm sharing Elaine's story not to preach or advise, but to connect. I know many of us, like Elaine, struggle with the pressure to achieve instant results, the feeling that we're not doing enough. The reminder, for everyone, including Elaine, is that every small step, no matter how tiny, counts. Whether it's swapping a sugary drink for water, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or simply taking a few deep breaths when feeling overwhelmed, these seemingly insignificant actions accumulate, leading to significant transformations over time. Consider this: a 1% improvement each day might seem barely noticeable. But over a year, that 1% improvement compounds to big things - That’s the incredible power of compounding small habits. So, where does one begin? The advice I give Elaine, and others, is to start small. Choose one thing, just one, that can be easily integrated into your daily routine. Perhaps it's drinking an extra glass of water, taking a five-minute walk, or spending a few minutes practising gratitude. Focus on that one thing until it becomes a natural part of your day. Then, and only then, add another. The 'Think Differently' journey is personal, unique to each individual. There's no one-size-fits-all approach. The most important thing we aim to discover is what works for you, with what you can sustain long term (which we learn together) I hope Elaine's story inspires you and urge you read what Elaine had to say by clicking here NOW, I ask you - what small steps have you taken, or plan to take, on your own wellness journey? Sharing stories can inspire us all! Remember, progress isn't always visible. Sometimes, the most profound changes happen on the inside. Be patient with yourself, celebrate your small victories and trust the process. You've got this. I urge you THINK DIFFERENTLY about your health and fitness. ![]() The promises of daily gym visits, perfectly portioned meals, and finally achieving that elusive fitness goal? We've all been there.
