There are a few dates in the calendar that don’t just happen — they mark a turning point. For us at Project Active, the Good Friday SUP is one of those. It’s the unofficial start of the season: the moment the year shifts from “getting through it” to getting out there. This morning reminded me of something I can easily forget when life gets busy: how good a steady paddle with good people is for the soul. The first paddle always tells the truth The first social paddle of the season has a way of cutting through the noise. You can turn up with a head full of to-do lists, deadlines, family logistics, and the usual background hum of modern life — and within minutes of being on the water, something changes. It’s not dramatic. It’s not a big motivational speech. It’s just simple, honest movement. A board under your feet. A paddle in your hands. A rhythm you can settle into. And suddenly you remember: this is what I’ve been missing......... Peaceful doesn’t mean passive People sometimes confuse “peaceful” with “doing nothing” but the kind of peace you get from paddling isn’t passive — it’s active. It’s the peace that comes from being present.
Your nervous system gets a chance to downshift, not because you’ve stopped living, but because you’ve started feeling where you are. That’s one of the reasons I’m so big on outdoor movement. It’s not fitness for fitness’ sake. It’s not about smashing yourself into the ground. It’s about using movement as a way back to yourself. A steady paddle is a reset button There’s something special about a steady paddle. Not sprinting. Not racing. Just moving forward at a pace where you can talk, breathe, and take it in. That steady rhythm does a few things at once:
And the best part? You don’t have to be “fit enough” to benefit from it. You just have to show up. Good people make it even better I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the people you move with matter. A social paddle isn’t about performance. It’s about community. It’s about being around people who get it — people who want to feel better, live better, and do something real with their time. There’s a quiet magic in a group of paddlers moving together:
For a lot of people, that’s the missing piece. They don’t need more information. They don’t need another app. They need a reason to get out the door — and a group that makes it feel easy. Why Good Friday hits differently Good Friday has a particular feel to it. The world is slightly quieter. The pace is softer. There’s space. And that’s exactly what the water gives you too. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to earn rest by burning yourself out first. You don’t have to wait until you’re completely depleted before you do something that fills you back up.
This is what “good for the soul” actually looks like When people say something is “good for the soul”, it can sound a bit fluffy — but I know exactly what it means. It means you finish the session and you feel:
It’s not about chasing a peak experience. It’s about returning to something steady and real. And if you’ve had a heavy winter — mentally, physically, emotionally — that matters. If you’re reading this and thinking “I need that”… You do. Not because you’re broken. Not because you’ve failed. But because you’re human. Most busy professionals I work with are carrying a lot. Work pressure. Family pressure. Injuries. Stress. The constant sense that they should be doing more. A social paddle is a simple antidote:
Watch this space for the next social paddle If today reminded me of anything, it’s this: we need more of these moments. So yes — watch this space for the next social paddle. I’ll be sharing details soon, including:
