The scent of damp earth and the crisp, cool air hit us as we tumbled out of the car. It was 2:30 AM on a Friday, and while most of Oxfordshire was sound asleep, we were about to embark on an adventure that would test our limits: the Yorkshire Three Peaks – not once, but twice.
Our journey began at 10.00PM on Thursday, leaving the familiar comfort of Oxfordshire behind. Head torches strapped on, illuminating a narrow beam into the inky blackness, we started our first ascent. We tackled the "non-traditional" route, a path less trodden, adding an extra layer of challenge to an already formidable undertaking. The only sounds were our footsteps, the rustle of our gear, and the occasional hoot of an owl. Hours blurred into one another as we navigated the rugged terrain under the dark canopy. Just over 10 hours after setting off, we completed our first round, a sense of quiet accomplishment settling over us as we passed other hikers beginning their journey. Back at base, a brief but much-needed period of rest and recuperation was in order. Sore muscles began to murmur, a prelude to the symphony of aches that would soon follow. But there was no time for self-pity; two more sturdy hikers were due to join us, ready to embrace the challenge of day two. The 4:00 AM alarm on Saturday felt particularly cruel. With aching limbs and a renewed sense of purpose, we were up and out by 4:30 AM, ready for our second attempt. This time, we would take on the traditional route, a familiar path for many, but for us, it was a test of endurance against accumulating fatigue. Each step was a conscious effort, a conversation between our wills and our complaining bodies. The rolling hills of Yorkshire, beautiful as they were, seemed to mock us with their endless undulations. Yet, our resolve remained mighty. We pushed on, fueled by camaraderie and the sheer stubbornness that only true adventure can ignite. Despite the mounting discomfort, we completed the second round in a slightly quicker time, a testament to our enduring spirit. In total, over two days, we conquered the six highest peaks in Yorkshire. We ascended a staggering 3,170 meters and covered a grueling 49 miles in a total of 20 hours of walking. For me personally, this expedition marked my third time completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks within seven days (21 times in total for me) – a testament to the fact that even after multiple attempts, this challenge remains as potent as ever, pushing both physical and mental boundaries. This was more than just a hike; it was a physical and mental challenge. It was about pushing past perceived limits, embracing discomfort, and discovering reserves of resilience we didn't know we possessed. The Yorkshire Three Peaks, especially in the "double edition," truly embodies the spirit of endurance. Now, watch this space but talks are already underway for 2026 'THE TRIPLE.....' Ready to lace up your boots and find your own limits? What’s your next adventure?
