Great Day in the Black Mountains: What You’re Capable of (With the Right People Around You)
The weather didn’t care (and that was the point) If you weren’t there, here’s a quick snapshot of what we were working with. I quote 'On Sunday, 29 March 2026, the Black Mountains (Brecon Beacons) saw high winds on the summits, sitting around 4050 mph. Around the middle of the day, gusts were stronger, and that made the wind chill bite hard.' Walking conditions were difficult on the tops. Lower down it eased off a bit more like 15 mph but the moment you climbed back into exposure, it was back to bracing yourself and committing to each step. That’s before you add in the rain and sleet. You can’t negotiate with weather like that. You can’t “motivate” it away. You can’t fake your way through it. You just have to meet it with the right mindset, the right kit, and the right people. When it gets tough, your character shows up There’s a reason I call this sort of day character-building. When conditions are comfortable, almost anyone can look confident. When the path is dry and the wind is behind you, it’s easy to feel like you’ve got it all under control. But when the wind is trying to peel you off the ridge, the sleet is finding the gap between your glove and your sleeve, and your legs are starting to feel the climb that’s when the real stuff comes out:
And yesterday, what I saw was exactly what you want to see in a group heading towards a bigger challenge.
That’s not just fitness. That’s resilience. The right people change everything One of the biggest lessons from days like yesterday is this: you don’t rise to the occasion alone. Yes, you can train solo. Yes, you can build fitness on your own. But when the weather turns and the hill starts asking questions, having the right people around you is a genuine advantage. Not because they carry you but because they help you access parts of yourself that are harder to reach when you’re on your own. The right people do a few important things:
And maybe most importantly: they make it meaningful. Shared hardship has a funny way of turning into shared pride.
Fitness is only part of the story Let’s be clear: yesterday was training. It trained your legs, your lungs, your feet, your balance and your pacing. It tested your kit choices and your layering. It gave you a proper feel for what exposure does to your energy. But it also trained your head. Because the reality is, the biggest challenges aren’t usually beaten by the fittest person in the group. They’re beaten by the person (or the group) who can stay calm, stay steady, and keep making good decisions when it’s uncomfortable. That’s why I’m proud of the effort, the attitude, and the teamwork. Norway is fast approaching (and this is why some we here) If you’re coming on the Norway trip, yesterday mattered. Not because Norway is going to be identical it won’t be. Different terrain, different rhythm, different demands. But because the principles are the same:
And after yesterday, you’ve got something powerful in the bank: proof.
That’s what makes a trip more enjoyable not just stronger legs, but a stronger sense of capability. A quick reflection: what did you learn yesterday? If you were there, it’s worth taking two minutes to reflect. Not in a fluffy way in a practical way. Ask yourself:
Those answers are gold. They help you train smarter, not just harder. Days like yesterday aren’t about suffering for the sake of it. They’re about building a kind of confidence that actually lasts. Not the loud, performative confidence. The quiet one. The one that says: “I’ve been tested. I didn’t crumble. I kept going. And I did it with good people around me.” So who’s up for the next one? If you want to get involved in future training days, hikes, or adventure prep sessions, drop me a message. Whether you’re building towards a specific trip or you just want to feel stronger, steadier and more capable in your own life we’ll make it happen. As Mark said - Ben put together a great route in The Black Mountains with new people and existing clients. Debbie had this to say - What a DAY! Gaby's thoughts were - Our Black Mountains Trip was excellent!
